THE MONDAY REPORT
The Ipswich Betting Report - Saturday 19 June 2010
Race 1 – Rainbow Styling $4.00, Little Stranger $7.00 and Athenas Gift $12.00
The opening race at Ipswich was won by Rainbow Styling and whilst he drifted from $2.80 to $4 he was still well backed during betting via general public support, but thankfully no money arrived for him on the phones.
Opening favourite Jackpot also eased from $2.40 to $2.80 but there was not a lot of interest in him, in fact there was not a lot of interest in the race at all, as I think that it was run too early.
Most bookmakers would lose on the race.
Race 2 – The Barracks $3.20, Igles Star $7.00 Seductive Grey $26.00
Skating On Ice was backed around the ring from $4.80 to $3.80 and there was also a move for Random Orbit late in betting and I laid that colt to lose $10,000 in a single bet late in betting.
It was a losing race.
Race 3 – Fab Fevola $1.65, Telesto Warrior $10.00 and Mondean $31.00
The good thing of the day Fab Fevola won race 3 and really there was not much interest in any other runner apart from Fasdehere which was specked, but basically from a bookmaking perspective it boiled down to a matter of how much you wanted to donate.
Race 4 – Rokatoko $2.50, Horoscopes $26.00 and Lochiel $2.90
No big money arrived either on course or on the phones for this winner Rokatoko, but the third placed Lochiel attracted good support and in one bet alone he took out $20,000.
No other runner was backed to any degree, so it depended if any bookmaker walked into Rokatoko as to whether they won or lost on the race.
Race 5 – Yield Curve $5.50, Zaman $5.50 and Forbes $10.00
Toowoomba trained gelding Yield Curve was well backed and firmed from $6 into $5 at one stage. Whilst he had 59kgs he was only racing mediocre opposition.
Zaman was tried at $6 and he’s an improving horse who is probably one to follow.
Forbes took out $10,000 in a single bet late in betting, so he too had his admirers and he ran third.
The only three that met with support ran the trifecta, so punters well and truly had their eye in by this stage.
Race 6 –Our Lukas $3.40, Frozone $11.00 and Warrior Within $41.00
Ipswich Cup winner Our Lukas was very well backed and only the barriers made the difference between Frozone winning and losing, as I feel sure if you change the barriers, you’d change the result, the way the race was run, but the photo decision going the way of Our Lukas made a massive difference to bookmakers. Our Lukas firmed from $3.70 into $3.40 and met with both general public and phone support.
Teary Eyed took out $20,000 in a single bet and Baughurst took out the same amount.
Fulmonti was also well tried, but unfortunately for bookmakers the favourites kept rolling in.
Race 7 –Adnocon $7.00, Barinka $7.50 and Maxisun $7.00
The Eye Liner Stakes was a wide betting race and to be honest punters weren’t that keen in opening their purse strings in this race.
The winner Adnocon got out to $7 and there was no money around the ring for the gelding.
Drenalin attracted some support at $6.50 and Prince Braeman met with support when he got out to $6.50 at the death, but really those two gallopers were the only two that you could lay in the race, so whilst bookies won on the race, we found the hold on the race grossly disappointing.
Race 8 –Kryptelon $14.00, Beyonce’s Star $16.00 and Paprika $3.70
The favourite Jerezana being scratched at the barrier virtually turned this race into a non event. Most bookies were happy to chance their arm with Jerezana in case the filly got too far back and got held up, but now we’ll never know. The way they went to the line she might have even won the race.
Paprika was backed when Jerezana was scratched at the barrier, but like I said the race became a non event.
It was a successful day at Ipswich for the trifecta of the club, the crowd and the punters, but not for bookmakers.
Lindsay will be fielding at Doomben on Wednesday, before heading to Eagle Farm on Saturday for the big Tattersall’s Racing Club day. Then he’ll take his budgie smugglers to the Sunshine Coast and have a dip in the Pacific Ocean on Sunday morning, before returning to the Corbould Park track to field later in the day.
