Red Sphere to bring up the hat-trick!

On a day when we expect a few shorties to get the money in Brisbane, we're going for Red Sphere to bring up the hat-trick in race 5 at Doomben, hopeful that there might just be a little bit of value there.

Red Sphere
ran the time and has the figures to go on winning after his strong last-start win over Charming Rogue at this course on 26 January.

With two wins and a placing from six Doomben starts, and a win and a placing from just two starts over the Doomben 1350 metres, Red Sphere has the form-lines to win again.

We reckon he'll get the run of the race just off the leaders and we hope the price might be a little generous if there is support for Charming Rogue who meets him 4kg better with the claim after his close defeat last start.

Regular rider Colless has switched from Charming Rogue to Red Sphere, with Charming Rogue taking the 3kg claim. That'll do us.

In looking for a bit of eachway value with our Melbourne headline selection, we've 'stolen' the Mug's scratched selection from last week in Irish Lights. Just a reminder that this filly inflicted pre-post favourite Avenue's only defeat on her first-up last preparation.

Our headline specials were straight into winning mode last week with Offhanded scoring at $4 in Sydney. Macedonian ran third in Melbourne and the Mug Punter has something to say about last week's Brisbane selection Encosta Tszyu in his article.

This week's headline specials

Red Sphere (Doomben race 5)
Brasileira (Rosehill race 1)
Irish Lights (Caulfield race 6)

               Lindsay's Lay of the Day

Well who were we to doubt the master?

We raised our eyebrows last week when he knocked the two big pre-race goes Extra Zero and Starspangledbanner. Then of course the extra pressure went on with stablemate Irish Lights being scratched to make it easier for Starspangledbanner.

But they should've consulted Lindsay first, with the Sunday papers showing Starspangledbanner out of a place.

Really, if you're not making big money out of Lindsay's lays, you're just not trying hard enough!

This week's lays are:

Caulfield race 6: Avenue

Rosehill race 6: Rangirangdoo

Tracy to whip up a storm!

Keen to get back into the winners' circle as quickly as possible, Gavin Haynes of Horsetorque has selected Typhoon Tracy as the day's best bet in the seventh at Caulfield tomorrow.

TYPHOON TRACY (race 7 Caulfield) is probably the best mare in the country; she has won seven from ten and already has a group 1 on her CV having won the Myer by panels last time in.

She has won two from three first up and Peter Moody suggests she is more forward this prep than for her third in the Liston first-up last time in.

She will jump on the bunny from the pole and will dictate terms to suit in a race devoid of natural pace. Most of her rivals are stayers resuming whilst the second favourite Heart Of Dreams usually needs a run.

She just wins, for mine.

The Mug looking to go one better!

Just the two value runners for the Mug last week for two seconds, Rebounded ($10) and Chameleon ($7), and in his usual indomitable style, he reckons he's cherry ripe to go one better this week.

The Mug's sure he's got a gilt-edged neddy to follow with his Sydney selection Dao Dao, first-up in the Expressway at Rosehill.

And when you have a close look at this horse's form, we're sure he's on to something. Just look at this horse's absolutely outstanding final run before a spell where he  was beaten a short half head and a short half head third in the Champions Mile at Shatin on 26 April last year.

He has an overall winning record of 50% with seven wins and four placings from fourteen starts, is a winner at the track and importantly for tomorrow's meeting has won his only start on a wet track.

Dao Dao was a recent trial winner at Rosehill and is a winner and dual place-getter from four previous first-up runs.

The Mug suggests he'll be a nice eachway chance tomorrow and a great horse to follow throughout the autumn.

He knows it sounds a bit incestuous, but the Mug is suggesting that last week's beaten Brisbane headline special Encosta Tszyu should be given another chance at Doomben tomorrow.

He thought the gelding's run last week indicated the horse was screaming out for more ground.

He also noted that the horse's program this time in was disrupted at his first run when he was forced into a mile race first-up after his intended first-up sprint race was called off at the aborted Eagle Farm meeting in January due to wet weather.

He'll be very surprised if Encosta Tszyu doesn't prove very competitive in tomorrow's race and most likely at a nice eachway price.

The Mug's waiting until the last race at Caulfield tomorrow to have a little something eachway on Instructor.

This Lloyd Williams'-owned gelding is a dual first-up winner and has two wins and a placing from four tries at 1400 metres.

He's a winner at the track and has strong wet track credentials if the rain arrives in Melbourne tomorrow.

At a double-figure quote, the Mug is quite happy to risk a little something on this horse.
