THE MONDAY REPORT
The Doomben Betting Report - Saturday 7 November
Race 1 – Catallion $4.60, Favours Traded $2.00 and Lunar Rose $26.00
The first race on the programme was won by Catallion and he led and just survived. He was the best backed runner in the race and the $5 bookmakers offered was snapped up and he was into $4.60 a race time and in fact the $4.60 quote was hard to get when they jumped.
Sanderson was specked around the ring at $8.
The favourite Favours Traded got no favours in the run and was unlucky not to win, as he only needed one more bound. He got to $2, but the winner was a worse result for bookmakers, so we started the day on a losing note. The winner only paying $3.10 on the tote, which is just another reason punters need to be on course.
Race 2 – Ringa Ringa Rosie $13.00, Jantzen $3.50 and Turnitup $10.00
The only horse backed in the race to any degree was Count Spur. They started backing the colt at $6 and he firmed into $4.80 at post time.
The two favourites, come stablemates, Jantzen and Old Wally were both easy in the market and no significant money arrived for either runner.
So we stood out the one horse and got a result.
Race 3 – Seesawing $3.20, Showciti $21.00 and Tarrayoukyan $3.60
This winner Seesawing ran the $3.20 favourite and met with good general public support, but there was no big money for her on the phones.
The second favourite Tarrayoukyan eased out to $3.60 and the rest of the field had no owners, so really we only laid the one horse again in this race and it finished up a small losing result when Seesawing won.
Race 4 – Onalar $7.00, Roy’s Legacy $8.00 and Beartracker $4.80
This winner Onalar was probably the best backed runner in the race. Punters took the $7 that was offered and the biggest single bet I laid on the galloper was $2,000 on him at that price, but there were many other smaller bets written against his name.
Drumshanbo was well backed also at $3.70.
There wasn’t much money around the ring for either of Beartracker or Pay Me, so whilst a $7 winner saluted on paper, bookmakers managed to lose on the race.
Race 5 – Gag Order $9.00, Backstabber $3.70 and Paymore $10.00
This developed into a good betting race and was by far the best betting race of the day up to this point.
Backstabber was extremely well backed and good money came for him on the phones at $4.20 and he firmed to run $3.70. Whilst the biggest bet I laid against him only took out $15,000 - there were a string of bets both on the phones and in the ring for the horse and I can assure readers that the half head margin that Gag Order nailed him by on the line made a huge difference to the day for bookmakers.
I laid a single bet on Pride Of Power which took out $30,000 at long odds, but he was caught wide the trip.
There was some money about for Steel Lips early in betting, but that money eventually dried up.
Jad was backed on the phones at $10.
Ben Hur was specked from $12 into $10 - so they backed a few in the race and we had a winning result.
Race 6 – Sword Of Damocles $13.00, Another Takeover $3.80 and The Crusader $16.00
The favourite in this race was Another Takeover and he is not having any luck in his races. I laid a series of bets against him, the biggest being a single wager of $10,000 on him.
Leapfrog was backed at $7.50/$8 and there was constant good money throughout betting for him at those prices.
There was also good money during betting for Monashee Warrior, but Cat D’Antibes was hard to lay.
This narrow victory by Sword Of Damocles saved bookmakers a huge payout on the runner-up.
Race 7 – Zahas Pride $6.00, Rasmussen $4.40 and Mitanni $9.00
The winner Zahas Pride was one of the best backed runners in the race, albeit they backed a few in it. He was $8.50 into $6 and there were several bets of $2,000 and $3,000 written against his name at the top odds, so it finished up a bad result for bookmakers.
Rasmussen was well tried as well and firmed from $4.80 to run at $4.40. The biggest single bet in the Doomben ring on him was $4,000 but there was good money for him on the phones as well.
Southerly Impact was the other well backed runner in the race and punters stepped into him late in betting at $5 and he ran $4.60. The biggest bet I laid on him was $5,000 each way.
So they only backed three in the race and two of the three ran the quinella, so we never looked likely to get a result here.
Race 8 – Life’s Short $21.00, Aquaterra $5.00 and Charter Boat $2.40
The best backed runner in this race was Charter Boat. The biggest bet I laid on him was $20,000.
There was good money all around the ring for Tightrope each way at $7 and there was some money around also for the runner-up Aquaterra, so you could lay Charter Boat and Tightrope particularly well and we got a result when roughie Life’s Short got home.
Bookmakers and punters were pretty much level pegging before the last race and the victory by Life’s Short sent most bookmakers home winning.
Lindsay will be fielding back at Doomben on Wednesday, Ipswich on Friday, Eagle Farm on Saturday and the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.
