The Weekend Whisper

There wasn't too
much Caloundra joy last week because of the extreme nature of the track.

Thank heavens for Horsetorque's Gavin Haynes who bounced back with a vengeance in

Melbourne with Swift Bay.

Winter Winners horse scores at $41!

Court Command got our new winter carnival feature off to a spectacular start when he led all the way to score at $41 in the Darley BTC Sprint at Doomben on 16 May.

Court Command
was one of two horses tabbed in his race from the inaugural Winter Winners report on the Prime Minister's Cup meeting held at the Gold Coast on 2 May. The other horse tabbed in this race was El Cambio and the two horses ran the quinella in the BTC Sprint.

The Gold Coast report steered punters in the right direction in other ways as well. The report highlighted the idiosyncratic nature of the Coast circuit and advised punters to look for form reversals from the meeting when racing returned to the roomier Brisbane tracks.

And that's exactly what happened at last week's Doomben meeting. Three winners from the Coast meeting, Facile Tigre, Marveen and Belong to Many all got beaten at Doomben, with four beaten horses from the Coast meeting (Rampant Lion, Court, Scenic Shot and Court Command) all winning at Doomben.

Winter Winners-#4

A weekly review to suss out likely carnival winners

The Doomben 10,000 meeting at Doomben on the 23 May

The overall purpose of the Winter Winners column is to help pinpoint future winners later in the carnival. As such, last week's meeting, run on a heavy track, is unlikely to throw up many useful form pointers, unless similar track conditions occur again sometime soon.

The feature race of course was the 10,000, won for the second year on the trot by the Greg Eurell-trained Apache Cat. We suggested in this column a fortnight ago, after his last run, that we had seen the 10,000 winner then and that's the way it turned out.

What about the Stradbroke then, did we see the winner in the 10,000 on Saturday?

The run that we liked was that of Black Piranha who made up good ground to just miss. When you consider that this horse has now run seconds at his last three starts, all at group 1, in the George Ryder, the Doncaster and now the 10,000, and that he'll have a weight drop from 59kg to an allocated 53.5kg in the Stradbroke, then you could be forgiven for having a little nibble at the current $7-8 quote.

Unfortunately, for those of you who like stats, as a 5yo Black Piranha falls outside the recent "winningest" age category that belongs to the 3 and 4 year-olds who have almost totally dominated things over the last decade or so. We'd suggest El Cambio and Ortensia are worth a look at from this age category.

MONDAY REPORT

Saturday 27 June
HORSES TO FOLLOW

Wasted Emotions
(Brisbane)

Held on well to finish second after doing all the hard work in front.

Battlefield
(Brisbane)

A nice win in smart time by this well-backed visitor. There's more to come.

Dorabella

(Brisbane)

First show of form this campaign by this former group 1 winner in New Zealand.

Stable runner review

We had just the two stable runners last weekend, Voice Commander whom we urged caution with because of his poor heavy track record and Syndrome who confirmed his promise with a nice placing in the Guineas. Stay on the track of this fellow.

** WE haven't added any new horses to follow this week because of the extreme state of the Caloundra track.
